Posture
Unfortunately, many pieces of equipment in the rehab and fitness industry have been touted as being able to magically fix posture, core strength, assist in weight-loss etc. As qualified fitness professionals, we know there is more to it than that.
One of the very first places to start with a new client is posture.
Posture is so much more important that spinal health. Fitness professionals know the importance of breathing during exercise and the impact that slouching or collapsing through the mid-section has on respiratory function. If you’re not sure, try lifting your kitchen chair with a nice straight back, lifted ribcage, while loading the legs. Now try it again with a curved back and depressed ribcage. Actually, on second thoughts, don’t try that. You’re liable to hurt your back because there’s no way to effectively load the legs or engage the core in that position. But you get my drift.
There are also studies available linking poor posture to poor cognitive functioning and proprioception in otherwise healthy older adults. With the addition of advanced technology and hand-held devices, the importance of educating our clients around good posture is evident.
So, what can you do? Start by teaching your client with good breathing techniques. If they are office-workers or seated for long periods during their shifts, encourage them to take any opportunity to get up and move around. Teach them simple stretches they can do anywhere, any time. Encourage the use of any equipment they have or feel comfortable with such as foam rollers, stability balls, or broomstick openers.
In short, encourage movement, specifically ‘opening’ movements for the chest, and strengthening movements for the T-spine. Teach them to be aware of their head position and how they sit at home.
While we’re at it, check in on your own posture too. Are you reading this on a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop? How long have you been in that position for?
As for me, I’ve been sitting for 45 minutes writing, so time for a big stretch and walk around starting NOW 😉
