Our Advice to Trainers: Learn, Implement and Experience
Here we give you our Top 4 Tips for new trainers.
Over the last six years, we have seen an emergence of record numbers of personal trainers and group fitness trainers enter the industry and flood our social media pages. The increased awareness of health and fitness is a great shift as we work to encourage and support our clients to live healthy lives, however, there is a misconception that we should know everything there is about training, fitness and health. Truth be told, we really do not know everything because there is no one size fits all approach.
Completing a certificate-level course within one year does not give us the skills or experience to leap into the fitness world as an expert.
Skills are developed through ongoing learning and as all experienced personal trainers know, a weekend seminar is never enough time to answer all of our questions or to learn everything there is to know on a topic.
Upskilling is about more than just obtaining our professional development points, it is about adding to our bottomless toolbox and giving us a foundation level of understanding on any one topic. Upskilling provides us with an opportunity to find areas we are interested in, to focus in on those areas and to provide a service that we are both confident and passionate about.
The fitness industry is extremely diverse and we are not all experts in all areas.
Our recommendation to any new trainer navigating the fitness industry in 2019-2020 is;
Top 4 Tips for new trainers
- Do as many courses as you possibly can – learn, implement, experience and repeat. This is where you will find what you enjoy doing and where you can make the biggest difference.
- Do not be afraid of not knowing, we never know it all but have the confidence to know your limitations and scope of understanding to better serve your clients. If you do not know something, do not be afraid to either source the information or refer to if it outside of your scope of practice.
- Find a mentor, even better find multiple mentors that you are able to learn from, observe and seek support when needed.
- Be open and honest with your clients – what we do is not and nor should be some big secret. Your job as a personal trainer is to coach and support your clients, the best way we can do that is to educate and empower them so they can understand the reasoning behind their training program.
At Level Up one of our goals is to support trainers within the fitness industry, to provide a place of mentorship, support and education.
